I enjoy creating compositions that are visually balanced by using hue and
intensity to create contrast between objects. The use of strong color within a
print or painting is important to the overall aesthetic of my two-dimensional
work. It is one way I like to express emotion and energy to the viewer. Two
famous artists that I look to for inspiration are Henri Matisse and Gustav
Klimt; Matisse for his vivid color choices and Klimt for his love of women of
all ages. Both of these artists can be seen in my sculptures and print work.
After
moving to the desert I became fascinated with the unique forms exclusive to
this area, my sculptural and two-dimensional pieces reflect this fascination.
As I grow older my work has shifted to reflect womanhood along with the changes
occurring in my life which I have no control over. This can be seen in my
recent screen prints; Don’t Want to Miss a Thing, completed after my daughter went off to college; Forever 25,
about women aging in the twenty-first
century; The Past is
Gone, inspired by a line taken from the
song Dream On by the band
Aerosmith which reflects on the past and where I go from here. In my sculptural
work I use mostly steel and neon to emphasize my point on womanhood. This can
be seen in Hot Flash, The
Chamber, and The Petite Niche.
